TASK 2: Understand The Design And Purpose Of Television Idents

Introduction To Channel Idents

Channel Idents are short audios and visuals identify themselves using a short clip of 15-30 seconds, which has their name brand in it, before a show starts on their station. They are usually creative and have their own unique logo which represents their station. BBC2 is a well known channel ident, as the '2' is usually shown as a big number. This channel ident makes it easier for the viewers to know what channel they are watching.

Three commonalities of Channel Idents are:
  • They all have a brand for their channel ident, so that it is easier for the viewers to recognise what station they are on.
  • They all have a little clip before a programme starts

Designs Of Channel Idents
The design of the channel ident is important because this is the main part which will catch the viewers attention to the station that they are watching. When the design of the channel ident is made, you need to make sure that is is entertaining for the viewers to look at.
Also, you need to make sure that the time of the channel ident isn't too long or the viewers will loose interest to the station that they are watching or listening to.

Purposes Of Channel Indents
The purposes of channel idents are:
  • To break up a show a bit. Having a channel ident allows another show get ready to be shown up next.
  • To advertise their brand. This will make more and more viewers watch this station because it will be become popular when others start watching it. BBC ONE, BBC TWO, BBC THREE & BBC FOUR and also Channel 4 and E4, are similar stations but they each have their own brand, so that the viewers recognise which station they are on. These stations have also been expanded so that their brand can be recognised to more and more viewers.
  • To make the station have its own identity, so that people recognise the channel or station that they are listening to or watching. As there are many stations that have their own channel idents, its easier for a channel ident to have its own identity.

Here's an example of one of Channel 4's Idents, shown below:

This channel ident is promoting the channel. The person talking is telling people about the previous show. They then talk about the next show coming up and inform people that the show will contain strong language. As the channel ident is about to come to an end, you see the number '4' which is created using lights and parts of the building.

Here's an example of one of BBC Three's Idents, shown below:

This channel ident is promoting the channel and talking about when the next episode, of the previous show, will be on. It is also announcing the next show. The 'BBC Three' logo has been used to show people what station they are on. They have also used animated characters so that people will remember this station.

Here's an example of one of BBC Two's Idents, shown below:

This channel ident is promoting the channel and talking about the previous show. It is also talking about the next show that is about to come on. The 'BBC Two' logo has been used at the bottom of the screen, to show people what station they are watching. They have also been creative by having the number '2' shown in a cup.

Chantel's Vox Pop

Vox Pop Proposal

For this part of my coursework, I had to get into a group of 3 people and come up with 5 questions in order to interview a few people.

The 5 questions were:
  1. What do you think will occur between the 21st and 23rd of December 2012, bearing in mind the 2012 phenomenon?
  2. Who do you think is the best premier league signing this season?
  3. Why do you think he’s the best premier league signing?
  4. Do you think Roberto Di Matteo’s sacking at Chelsea was hard or do you think he deserved to go?
  5. Do you think GTA5 is going to be the game of the year before it’s even out?

After that, I went to get a portable recorder, a video camera, a microphone, headphones and a tri-pod. Once we had the equipment, we interviewed 3 people. I recorded 2 people on the camera, while the other people in my group recorded another person on the camera and recorded the interviewees voices using the microphone and the portable recorder.

Once that was done, I imported the files onto the computer and started to edit them, making sure that each part was in the correct places. I also cut out some parts which wasn't needed. After that, I imported the file and uploaded it to Youtube, then onto my blog.

The next part of this coursework was to import the video files to Pro Tools. I then had to cut down each part of when someone talks and put it into a separate part. When doing this, I listened to when 1 person was speaking, then I cut their part and kept doing that for each person.
Once that was done, I went to the mixer and made sure that all the sounds were at the right level of where I wanted it to be. When that was complete, I bounced the files, then I imported the files back to Final Cut Pro and added an appropriate soundtrack to it. After that, I made sure that everything in the video was fine and once I saw that everything was complete, I exported the files to youtube and uploaded the video onto my blog.

Claymation History

Claymation History

Claymation is a form of animated which is created using plasticine and stop-motion.
One of the first claymation animations was created by Aardman and it was called 'Morph'.
Aardman was founded in 1972 by Peter Lord and David Sproxton.

Morph was produced for the BBC for children to watch. It was a simple character made out of plasticine and was created by using stop-motion. To do this, they had to move the Morph slowly into different places that they wanted the Morph to be in, and take picture shots of each movement. Although the Morph character isn't around anymore, other clay characters have then been created, such as, Wallace and Gromit.

Animator Timeline

Chantel & Gloria's Morph Animation Clip & My Claymation Animation Technique Evaluation

My Claymation Animation Technique Evaluation

For this piece of coursework, we had to create a morph character using plasticine.
Firstly, we rolled the plasticine into a ball shape, then we had to stretch it out to form a head shape. After that, we stretched out the arms, legs and formed the feet.
Once that was done, we then created a nose, eyes and a mouth for the morph character.
When creating a morph character, you have to make sure that all the parts don't fall apart and you need to make sure that it is stable to stand up. You also have to make sure that the morph character isn't in the light too much, or it could melt.

After that, we had to create a short animated story using our morph characters. Me and my friend came up with a story about two best friends. One of them is jealous that their best friend found a new friend to be close with. Therefore, the friend that is jealous, gets into arguments with both of them, but they eventually end up becoming friends.

Overall, I found it was quite hard to animate as you had to make very small movements.
We didn't have a lot of time to make our animated clip, but with the time that we had, we tried to edit our animated clip as quick as possible and tried to make sure that our animation didn't look too rushed.

I think that our animated clip looked good, as it was clear to see what was going on and I think that the music was suitable for our animated clip.
