The Film Production Cycle

The main stages of the film cycle are: Production, Marketing & Exchange, Distribution and Audience Consumption.

PRODUCTION
  • Pre-Production: This is when all the research for the film is done. This includes; getting the actors together, planning where you want the location to be, creating a storyboard and sorting out the budget for the film.
  • Production: This is where all the filming takes place. All the planning that was made during pre-production comes together. You make sure that the equipment is there, the actors and the setting is ready.
  • Post Production: This is when you start editing the film by adding special effects, add titles, graphics, soundtracks, music and the speed and timing of the film, making sure that all the scenes are in the right order and are recorded properly. You also do some advertisements such as on; posters, billboards and trailers to promote the film.

There are some other film crews that are involved in making a film:

  • Director
  • Assistant Director
  • Screenwriter
  • Casting Director
  • Location Manager
  • Art Director
  • Props Master
  • Costume Designer
  • Hair & Make-up Artist
  • Film & Sound Editor
  • Boom Operator

 MARKETING & EXCHANGE
This is when you the filmmakers start promoting the soundtracks of the film, they advertise
t-shirts, bags, and possibly toys to do with the film. They also show you film trailers so that the audience can get excited about the film and so that the film will be popular once it's officially out.

DISTRIBUTION:
This is when the film is ready to be released to the audience at Cinema's. The filmmakers decide on a date when the film should be released and what Cinema's the film should be screened on. The film gets displayed in some Cinema's for a few weeks as a little tester to see if there's a lot of people that want to watch it. If there's a big audience that want to watch this film, it will be screened longer.

AUDIENCE CONSUMPTION:
This is the most important part of the film cycle. If someone watches at film and they like it, they go and tell others about it and by doing that, more and more people will watch the film and it becomes very popular.
However, if someone watches the film and they didn't think it was good, they go and tell others that they didn't like it and then some people may not bother watching it because of what their friend said about that film.
The audience's reviews on the film could influence the profit for the film because of 'word of mouth'.

TASK 1: My Film Review On Men In Black 3

The film I'll be analysing is Men In Black 3. This film was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and written by Etan Cohen and Lowell Cunningham. This film was released on the 25th May 2012. Men In Black 3 features well known actors; Will Smith (as Agent J), Tommy Lee Jones as (Agent K), Josh Brolin as (Young Agent K), Jermaine Clement (as Borris The Animal), Michael Stuhlbarg (as Griffin) and Emma Thompson (as Agent O).

In this film, Borris the animal escapes from prison which is located on the moon. He then goes after Agent K because Agent K is repsonible for the loss of his left arm. Agent K dies so  Agent J travels back in time to 1969 to save Agent K and so that things will be the right way its suppose to be. Agent J meets up with the Young Agent K and starts to find out that there are secrets to the universe which Agent K never told him.

The budget of this film was $225,000,000 at Box Office and was grossed at $621,568,042 worldwide. Men In Black 3 was distributed by Colombia Pictures.

Target Audience:
It is rated as PG-13 for Sci-fi, Action and Comedy. Therefore the target audience of this film is for children as long as their parents are with them because there are some scenes with action that young children won't be able to watch with a parent or guardian.
This film is also for people who are 13+ and over and anyone who likes Sci-fi, Action and Comedy.

Reviews:
Men In Black 3 received mostly positive critics. Roger Ebert gave the film 3 out of 4 stars because he felt that Josh Brolin played the role as, Young Agent K very well.
Rene Rodriguez gave the film 1 out of 4 stars and stated, "Men in Black 3 is so dull and empty, it's the first movie that has ever made me think. Thank God this is in 3D."

Nominations & Awards:
Men In Black 3 was nominated for 'Favourite Action Movie' at 'The People's Choice Awards' in 2013 recently.
This film was also nominated and won the 'Academy Award' for Best Makeup. It was also nominated for 'Best Original Musical', 'Comedy Score', 'Best Art Direction', the 'Golden Globe Award' for 'Best Motion Picture' - Musical or Comedy.

TASK 1: My Review On Short Films 'Soft & Telling Lies' By Simon Ellis

I watched two short films which were directed by Simon Ellis. The first film, I watched, is called 'Telling Lies'. This film is about relationships. The main character (Phil) and his girlfriend (Sarah), split up the night before, then he went off with a different woman the next day. His mum then called him then Sarah called. Even though they split up, Sarah was a bit jealous that he went with a different woman. However, she ended up telling Phil that she slept with his best friend called Darren.

In this film we didn't see the characters on the screen, instead there was a blank black screen and we saw animated captions of when the characters speak. The text had different colours for when each character speaks so that we could see who was talking. When a character was shouting, the text became bigger and when a character was telling a lie, the text was white.

Overall, I liked watching this short film as the storyline was interesting and I think it was different to have a film where you just see the text and you still understand what is going on. Looking at some reviews, some people said 'This film is fast' and 'Its a clever idea which got over a clear message of don't believe all you hear!'
I liked that the film was quite simple and I like the idea used to make this short film.

The second film, I watched, is called 'Soft'. This film is a social drama about a gang of young people who bully a father and son. The dad is then forced to stand up to them, however, he's not really able to deal with them, so in the end the son stands up to them.

Firstly, we see phone footage of a teenage boy getting beating up by a group of young people. After that, we see, what seems to be, a gang leader who scares people on the road and bullies a middle-aged man near the newsagent.
I liked the way the phone footage was used because it was like the person in the gang was recording it all as we were watching it. However, we never saw the camera.

Looking at some reviews, some people said 'Its an intense film', and 'It's a great film and inspiring'. I found this film interesting as I liked the use of the way it was filmed. I also liked that in the end, we didn't expect, the teenage boy, who got bullied by the gang, to end up beating them up with a bat. It was a good film and it was made well.

Comparing these two films, there were a lot more things happening in the 'Soft' film as we could see the characters and everything that was going on. It was more interesting than the film 'Telling Lies' because the film caught your attention and you wanted to see what was going to happen next.
You was able to relate to the film 'Soft' as it was showing us middle-class people and it involved young people who are either in school or on the streets doing nothing.
