Cut Out Animation History

Cut Out Animation:

Cut out animation is a creative way of making an animated film.
When doing cut out animation, the characters are flat, as you cut out materials such as paper, images from magazines or use photographs to creative a story out of it.
The first cut out animation was made by Quirino Cristiani in Argentina.



Lottie Reinger

Lottie Reinger, also known as 'Charlotte', was a German silhouette animator.
She really liked the Chinese art of silhouette puppetry and therefore, built her own puppet theatre for people to come and see.





In 1918, Lottie Reiniger animated wooden rats called 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin'.




As her work was successful, she got into a company called 'The Institute for Cultural Research' which is an experimental animation and short film studio. 



Terry Gilliam

Terry Gilliam is an American-born British screenwriterfilm directoranimator and actor.
His first career was an animator and a strip cartoonist.
One of his first photographic strips was called 'Help!'. After that, he started doing animated sequences for children such as one called 'Do Not Adjust Your Set.'








Ivor The Engine

Ivor The Engine is a British children's animation done by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin's who are apart of a comapny called 'Small films.'

Ivor The Engine was a children's television series made for black and white television in 1958, but then the BBC produced it in colour in 1975. It was filmed using stop motion and it was animated, using cardboard cut-outs, painted with watercolours.
